Summer brings sunshine and warmth, but for our beloved four-legged friends, it can also pose real challenges. Heatstroke, overheating, burns from hot pavement – these are just a few dangers dogs face during hot weather. So how can we help them stay safe and comfortable?
🌡️ 1. Avoid walks during the hottest part of the day
Between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM, the sun is at its peak, and the ground can become scorching hot. It’s best to stay in the shade or indoors during this time. Take walks early in the morning or later in the evening, when temperatures are lower.
💡 Tip: Touch the pavement with your hand – if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
💧 2. Always provide access to fresh, clean water
Dogs drink more during hot days. Make sure your pet always has access to fresh water, and if you’re heading out, don’t forget to bring a portable water bottle or bowl.
🌳 3. Provide shade and cool places to rest
Dogs who spend time outside should have a shaded area where they can cool down. Indoors, leave windows open (safely), or use a fan or air conditioning. A damp towel on the floor or a special cooling mat can also offer relief.
🚫 4. Never leave your dog in the car!
Not even for a few minutes. Not even with windows cracked. Not even in the shade. A car can heat up to 60°C (140°F) in minutes – which can be deadly. 🛑
🐾 5. Watch for signs of overheating
Symptoms of heatstroke include:
🔹 Heavy, rapid panting
🔹 Lethargy or weakness
🔹 Excessive drooling or vomiting
🔹 Elevated body temperature
🔹 Pale or bluish gums
If you suspect overheating – contact your vet immediately!
🍉 6. Cool treats can help
Frozen water with a few fruit pieces (seedless), special frozen dog treats, or even wet towels for playtime can be a fun and refreshing way to beat the heat.
🐕🦺 7. Consider your dog’s breed
Short-nosed breeds (brachycephalics), long-coated dogs, seniors, and dogs with health issues are especially sensitive to heat. They need extra care and even shorter walks.
❤️ In Summary:
Summer can be fun, but only with proper care. Help your dog stay safe, comfortable, and happy – they rely on you completely!
